On Saturday, September 16, Ryan Martin (22-0, 11 KOs) scored a split-decision victory over a very tough Francisco Rojo (20-3, 13 KOs) of Mexico in the HBO Pay-Per-View opener of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin undercard at the T-Mobile Arena.

The victory gave Martin the vacant WBA Intercontinental lightweight title and he retained WBA Continental Americas 135-pound title.

Martin remained may have gotten the nod, but Rojas was game for much of the fight. Martin tried to control the majority of the fight, landing 13 power punches in the opening round.

Rojo dictated the action and opened the first round landing a right hook and a uppercut to start the show.

Rojas was timing Martin and countering with a right hand while also landing good body shots but began to slow down in Round 5 and Martin began landing combinations.

Martin landed two low blows in Round 6 and was eventually deducted a point in the ninth round. At this point Martin was told instructed to lay off the body attacks by his corner men.

Despite coming out victorious, Martin stated he didn’t feel 100 percent throughout the bout.

“I know the judge that scored in favor of Rojo recognized good boxing in him,” said Martin. “I’m glad I have this new belt and it’s on to the next.”

One judge scored the bout 98-91 in favor of Rojo while two judges scored it 96-93 95-94 in favor of Martin.

Martin showed inconsistency in controlling the fight but finished with good combinations and landed solid power shots.
